This is the new leaked Comic-con footage of Disney’s new Tron sequel, Tr2n - due for release some time in 2010.

The footage is very poor, but you can see enough to realize that Jeff Bridges is back for the sequel (huge relief), and the visual effects looks stunning. The light cycles look amazing.

kicking it: homeless world cup

Kicking It is a documentary narrated by actor Colin Farrell, which showcases the lives of six remarkable homeless men from the far reaches of the world that all possess one unique talent - they’re incredible soccer players.

It’s heartwarming to see six homeless people achieving their dream of playing in a World Cup soccer event - six homeless people off the street is six less, which makes me feel all good inside.

i am legend rewrites the word “intense”

Will Smith has up until a couple of years ago been synonymous with the whiz-bang hapless comedic ventures as Independence Day, Bad Boys, and Hitch. Type cast in roles that offer him no real substance as a movie character that we could love, nurture, or really connect with.

Then came Pursuit of Happyness, a real gem of genius. Will pulled you into the world of Chris Gardner, a broke but ambitious medical apparatus salesman trying to stake his claim in the world of business and Ferrari driving financiers. You just felt for Chris - his selfless love for his son Christopher, the sleepless nights in a homeless shelter, and his ultimate drive to make it into the world of finance. In a nutshell, Will brings to the screen the beautifully warm emotions of humanity and the strife Chris endured to bring forth a better life - you will cry at the end, guaranteed.

There’s little wonder then that Will Smith received an Oscar nomination for this performance.

This year he hits us in the solar plexus with a disturbingly realistic post-plague New York City flick entitled I Am Legend.

[you think you've seen all Hollywood can bring in the name of monster movies?  think a-fucking-gain]

In short, the movie is centered around the world of the only survivor of a horrific plague that has consumed almost all of humanity, leaving only a small amount of “creatures” that have succumb to the mutating properties of said virus. These mutants (or zombies, if you like) hide in the shadows during daylight, and come out only after sunset to feed. Will Smith is somehow immune to the virus and has spent 3 years alone, accompanied only by his German shepherd, Sam. They hunt during the day for food, and revel in hiding in Will’s Washington Square Park apartment after dusk.

The movie is splendid. Frightening. Terrifying. Moving. Relentless.

One second you will be marveling at the New York cityscape with its overgrown streets and abandoned cars lining the curb, the next jumping out of your seat as one of the creatures leaps out of a broken window at Grand Central station.

Will is marvelous, and I feel that he’s come a hell of a long way since his boyish jaunts as a rich kid cop. You connect with him from the beginning of the movie, and follow his daily adventures in the streets of NY, hoping that he’ll finally find another human survivor - praying that him and his dog Sam make it through another night.

I must admit though that it is a very intense movie - I left the theater thinking “what the fuck just happened to me?”. In the truest sense, I Am Legend is the ultimate roller coaster ride that I’ve been waiting for in 2007.

Bravo Will.

band of brothers: superb

band of brothersAbout a week ago I ordered the entire ten-part series of Band of Brothers, the HBO original series that ran in 2001. The story starts with Easy Company (of the US Army’s 101st Airborne through the eyes of the soldiers) being put through the rigors of “basic training” in the first episode “Currahee” - given its name from the hill the troops had to run in full combat gear as part of their fitness training.

The entire series is beautifully shot, sharply written, and splendidly presented and directed by a fine list of pros - Tom Hanks himself stepping in to direct Part 5, Crossroads.

Executive Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, Band of Brothers is a true viewing spectacle bringing WWII and the long battle for Easy Company.

netflix - loving it

I signed up for Netflix about 2 weeks ago, and I’m loving it. I opted for the 3 movies at a time package, and I get to watch about 3-6 each week - if you’re skeptical about joining, they give you a 2 week free trial, which you can cancel at any time.

Sat here with the Back to the Future trilogy… I love Netflix!

The official Sony Pictures website has announced that Thomas Hayden Church will be playing Spiderman’s latest arch enemy in the webslinger’s third release… Sandman! You may remember Church from the fabulous movie Sideways. The shot above/left is from the movie set - I think he’ll do a pretty good job.

rambo IV gets funding

Our favorite droopy-lipped action hero looks like he’s at it again. Sly has approached Millennium Films, Emmett/Furla Films and Equity Pictures and scraped together a budget of $50million to start work on his next gun-toting fiasco. An article at Snopes.com refers to a rumor that “Sylvester Stallone will once again portray John Rambo in Rambo IV, an upcoming film which will feature the hero tackling terrorists in Afghanistan and capturing Osama bin Laden.”

Movieweb.com reports:

In Rambo IV, John Rambo is living a quiet life as a recluse in the U.S. — until a young girl goes missing, and he returns to macho form and takes justice into his own hands. Plan is to shoot in Mexico and the U.S.

I myself am looking forward to another “war epic” to match the directorial prowess of Iron Eagle II and Strike Commando.I think Charles ‘Chappy’ Sinclair could kick John Rambo’s ass.

rocky to make a comeback!

Yes folks, Stallone is back! It’s official - “Rocky Balboa” will be the 6th movie in the Rocky series to hit the big screen. After years of trying to get another Rocky movie released, Sly Stallone has managed to get co-funding from MGM, Columbia Pictures and Revolution Studios, and will be distributed by Columbia Pictures.

CNN’s article goes on to say:

The latest version, which sources said is similar to the tone and grit of the first two movies, persuaded the studios to negotiate a deal.“In many ways, the screenplay really took me back to the original ‘Rocky,’ ” Revolution Studios founder Joe Roth said in a statement. “As a past champion, Rocky Balboa is once again a regular guy who has to find himself and deal with real life. This film brings Rocky’s story full circle.”

In the new installment, Rocky, lonely and retired in Philadelphia, comes out of retirement, intending to fight a few low-profile local fights. He’s approached to fight a match with reigning heavyweight champ Mason “The Line” Dixon, and soon his comeback ignites a media firestorm.

“‘Rocky Balboa’ is about everybody who feels they want to participate in the race of life, rather than be a bystander,” Stallone said in a statement. “You’re never too old to climb a mountain, if that’s your desire.”

I wonder who’ll be playing his opposite corner in this one… I’ve read stories that Dolph Lundgren was asked to play Ivan Drago again and even Vin Diesel has been in talks with Stallone’s people.
