Will Smith has up until a couple of years ago been synonymous with the whiz-bang hapless comedic ventures as Independence Day, Bad Boys, and Hitch. Type cast in roles that offer him no real substance as a movie character that we could love, nurture, or really connect with.
Then came Pursuit of Happyness, a real gem of genius. Will pulled you into the world of Chris Gardner, a broke but ambitious medical apparatus salesman trying to stake his claim in the world of business and Ferrari driving financiers. You just felt for Chris - his selfless love for his son Christopher, the sleepless nights in a homeless shelter, and his ultimate drive to make it into the world of finance. In a nutshell, Will brings to the screen the beautifully warm emotions of humanity and the strife Chris endured to bring forth a better life - you will cry at the end, guaranteed.
There’s little wonder then that Will Smith received an Oscar nomination for this performance.
This year he hits us in the solar plexus with a disturbingly realistic post-plague New York City flick entitled I Am Legend.
[you think you've seen all Hollywood can bring in the name of monster movies? think a-fucking-gain]
In short, the movie is centered around the world of the only survivor of a horrific plague that has consumed almost all of humanity, leaving only a small amount of “creatures” that have succumb to the mutating properties of said virus. These mutants (or zombies, if you like) hide in the shadows during daylight, and come out only after sunset to feed. Will Smith is somehow immune to the virus and has spent 3 years alone, accompanied only by his German shepherd, Sam. They hunt during the day for food, and revel in hiding in Will’s Washington Square Park apartment after dusk.
The movie is splendid. Frightening. Terrifying. Moving. Relentless.
One second you will be marveling at the New York cityscape with its overgrown streets and abandoned cars lining the curb, the next jumping out of your seat as one of the creatures leaps out of a broken window at Grand Central station.
Will is marvelous, and I feel that he’s come a hell of a long way since his boyish jaunts as a rich kid cop. You connect with him from the beginning of the movie, and follow his daily adventures in the streets of NY, hoping that he’ll finally find another human survivor - praying that him and his dog Sam make it through another night.
I must admit though that it is a very intense movie - I left the theater thinking “what the fuck just happened to me?”. In the truest sense, I Am Legend is the ultimate roller coaster ride that I’ve been waiting for in 2007.
Bravo Will.
